Poetic Formats in Contemporary Poetry: A How-To Guide: Poetic Forms

Poetic Forms

Here you will find a sampling of poetic formats, including Sonnets, Villanelles, Sestinas, Concrete Poems/ Calligrams, Concrete Poems in the Digital Age/ Born Digital, and Performance Poetry. Under the heading for each form, you will find a definition of the form, numerous examples of contemporary poets engaging the form, and some literary criticisms. These lists are by no means ezhaustive in terms of the formats available, but hope to suggest some of the ways in which modern poets find inspiration in and breathe new life into traditional forms. Resources include audio, video, and text.
